What does WC19 cover?
WC19 addresses the design and performance of wheelchairs intended for use as motor-vehicle seats. The concept includes transport-related wheelchair features such as securement interfaces, occupant-restraint accommodation and performance under specified test conditions.
Is WC19 the same as WC18?
No. WC18 addresses wheelchair tiedown and occupant-restraint systems (WTORS). WC19 addresses the wheelchair when it is used as the occupant’s seat. They are related but different parts of wheelchair transportation safety.
How is WC19 related to ISO 7176-19?
ISO 7176-19 is the international standard addressing wheelchairs intended for use as seats in motor vehicles. WC19 is the corresponding subject within the US RESNA wheelchair transportation standards framework. Users should apply the document required for the relevant product, jurisdiction and project rather than assuming the two publications are identical.
Does a WC19 wheelchair still require WTORS?
Yes. Wheelchair-as-seat compliance does not secure the wheelchair to the vehicle or restrain the occupant by itself. The vehicle still needs an appropriate wheelchair securement and occupant-restraint system.
How can I tell whether a wheelchair is intended for transport?
Check the wheelchair manufacturer’s transport information, labels and designated securement points. Do not infer transport suitability from appearance alone.
Can a wheelchair-mounted belt be used as the occupant restraint?
Only where its crash-restraint function is specifically designed, tested and documented for that use. A normal postural positioning belt should not automatically be treated as a vehicle occupant restraint.
Why does WC19 matter to WAV builders and operators?
