ISO 10542-1 – Wheelchair Tiedown and Occupant-Restraint Systems
ISO 10542-1 is an international standard for wheelchair tiedown and occupant-restraint systems (WTORS) used in motor vehicles. It addresses the design and performance of WTORS, test methods, product identification and labelling, and information supplied by manufacturers.
What does ISO 10542-1 cover?
- Wheelchair securement and occupant-restraint system design
- Performance requirements and dynamic testing
- Component and system requirements
- Marking, labelling and identification
- Installer, user and maintenance instructions
What does it not replace?
ISO 10542-1 does not replace vehicle regulations, local installation requirements, wheelchair-as-a-seat requirements, manufacturer instructions or jurisdiction-specific approval processes.
How is it different from ISO 7176-19?
ISO 10542-1 primarily addresses the WTORS. ISO 7176-19 addresses wheelchairs intended for use as seats in motor vehicles. The two subjects are related but should not be treated as the same compliance question.
How does Estraints use this framework?
Estraints uses the applicable standards framework to support calculation and documentation of upper shoulder-belt anchorage geometry for a defined occupant, wheelchair position and vehicle configuration. The calculator is a decision-support tool and does not certify a vehicle or installation.

Always confirm the current published edition, amendments and local regulatory requirements before applying a standard to a project.
Current ISO publication status
ISO lists ISO 10542-1:2012 as the current published edition, with Amendment 1:2021. A third edition is under development and has not yet replaced the published 2012 edition.

Need to assess wheelchair shoulder-belt geometry?
Use the Estraints Wheelchair Restraint Calculator to calculate and document upper shoulder-belt anchorage geometry for the assessed wheelchair, occupant and vehicle configuration.
