ISO 7176-19 – Wheelchairs Used as Seats in Motor Vehicles
ISO 7176-19 addresses wheelchairs intended for use as seats in motor vehicles. It is a wheelchair standard, not a WTORS product standard.
Why does this distinction matter?
Safe wheelchair transportation depends on more than the restraint equipment. The wheelchair itself becomes the occupant’s seating platform during travel. A transport-ready wheelchair is designed and tested with this use in mind, while the WTORS is responsible for wheelchair securement and occupant restraint.
What is WC19?
In the US RESNA framework, WC19 refers to the wheelchair transportation section addressing wheelchairs used as seats in motor vehicles. It is closely related in subject to ISO 7176-19, but the documents should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the applicable requirements.
Does a WC19 or ISO 7176-19 wheelchair remove the need for WTORS?
No. A wheelchair designed for use as a motor-vehicle seat still needs the appropriate vehicle securement and occupant restraint system for the application.
What should installers and operators look for?
Use the wheelchair manufacturer’s transportation information, identify designated securement points where provided, confirm compatible restraint equipment and avoid assuming that a postural belt is automatically a crash occupant restraint.
