There is no single North American wheelchair transportation standard. The United States and Canada use different standards frameworks, and international ISO standards can also be relevant depending on the wheelchair, WTORS and project.
Which standards are important in the United States?
RESNA WC-4
RESNA WC-4 is the Wheelchairs and Transportation volume. Section 18 (WC18) addresses wheelchair tiedown and occupant-restraint systems, while Section 19 (WC19) addresses wheelchairs intended for use as seats in motor vehicles.
SAE J2249
SAE J2249 is an SAE Recommended Practice for wheelchair tiedown and occupant-restraint systems used in motor vehicles. It has been an important technical reference in North American WTORS development and practice.
Which standard is important in Canada?
CSA Z605
CSA Z605 addresses mobility aid securement and occupant restraint systems (MASOR) in the Canadian context.
What about ISO 10542-1?
ISO 10542-1 is the international WTORS standard. It can be relevant to products and projects in North America, but the applicable local requirements still need to be identified.
What about ISO 7176-19?
ISO 7176-19 addresses wheelchairs intended for use as seats in motor vehicles. It should be distinguished from standards dealing with the WTORS itself.
Can one standard prove the whole vehicle is compliant?
No. Wheelchair, WTORS, installation and vehicle requirements are separate compliance questions. Regulations and approval requirements can also vary by jurisdiction.
