Powered wheelchairs can require additional planning in vehicle transport because of their mass, frame design, seating functions, batteries and accessories. The wheelchair manufacturer’s transport information and the installed WTORS should be checked before deciding how the wheelchair will be secured and how the occupant restraint will be routed.
Why can powered wheelchairs be more difficult to secure?
Powered wheelchairs are often heavier than manual chairs and can have complex bases, tilt/recline systems, removable components and limited access to strong securement locations.
What securement points should be used?
Use designated transport securement points where provided or other locations specifically supported by the wheelchair and WTORS manufacturer’s instructions. Do not attach tiedowns to wheels, armrests, foot supports, removable seating parts or other components that are not intended for transport securement.
What should be considered with tilt and recline?
Powered seating functions can change the occupant’s position relative to the vehicle restraint. Follow the wheelchair manufacturer’s transport configuration requirements and check that the final pelvic and shoulder-belt path is appropriate.
Do batteries need special consideration?
Battery type, installation and transport requirements depend on the wheelchair design and manufacturer instructions. The battery system should remain correctly retained and configured for vehicle transport.
What about oxygen, communication devices and accessories?
Additional equipment should be positioned and secured so it does not become a hazard or interfere with the wheelchair securement or occupant restraint.
Why does wheelchair mass matter?
Higher mass can increase the demands on the securement system, vehicle anchorages and installation. The complete system must be suitable for the wheelchair and application.
How does a powered wheelchair affect shoulder-belt geometry?
Seating height, tilt/recline position and wheelchair location can alter the relationship between the occupant’s shoulder and vehicle anchorage. For design and assessment work, use the Estraints Wheelchair Restraint Calculator to calculate and document the assessed geometry.
What should an operator do when securement is unclear?
Stop and seek competent guidance rather than improvising. The correct method may require wheelchair manufacturer information, WTORS instructions, technical support or engineering review.
