There is no single universal replacement interval for every WTORS belt or component. Equipment should be replaced when required by the manufacturer, when damage or contamination means it can no longer be used as intended, or when post-crash instructions require replacement or inspection.
What should be checked on wheelchair restraint webbing?
- Cuts, tears or fraying
- Severe abrasion
- Heat or chemical damage
- Contamination that affects operation
- Damaged stitching
- Webbing that does not extend, retract or tension correctly
What should be checked on hooks, buckles and fittings?
Look for distortion, cracking, corrosion, excessive wear, contamination and fittings that do not latch, close or release correctly.
What about floor track and vehicle anchorages?
Check for visible damage, deformation, looseness, contamination or obstructions that prevent the restraint fitting from engaging correctly. Damaged or suspect anchorages should not remain in use without appropriate inspection and rectification.
When should docking equipment be taken out of service?
Take action if the docking system does not engage or release correctly, if the wheelchair interface is damaged or if any status indicator does not operate as required by the manufacturer.
What should happen after a crash?
Do not assume restraint equipment is safe to reuse because no damage is visible. Follow the WTORS manufacturer’s post-crash inspection and replacement instructions and the organisation’s incident process.
Should belts be replaced just because they are old?
Use the manufacturer’s specified service-life, inspection and replacement instructions where provided. Avoid inventing a universal time interval that is not supported by the actual product documentation.
What should an organisation record?
- Equipment identification where practicable
- Inspection dates
- Defects found
- Equipment taken out of service
- Repairs or replacements
- Crash exposure and follow-up actions
