AS/NZS 10542.1 vs ISO 10542-1

ISO 10542-1 is the international standard for wheelchair tiedown and occupant-restraint systems, while AS/NZS 10542.1 is the Australian/New Zealand adoption used for the local standards framework. They are closely related, but users should work from the publication and amendment status required for the project rather than assuming the documents are identical.

What is ISO 10542-1?

ISO 10542-1 specifies design and performance requirements and associated test methods for WTORS, together with product marking, labelling and manufacturer instructions. ISO currently lists ISO 10542-1:2012 as published, with Amendment 1:2021 and a new Edition 3 work item under development in 2026.

What is AS/NZS 10542.1?

AS/NZS 10542.1 is the Australian/New Zealand WTORS standard based on the ISO framework and issued for the local standards environment. For Australian and New Zealand work, users should confirm the current AS/NZS publication, amendments and any regulatory or contractual references that apply to the vehicle or service.

Can I use ISO 10542-1 instead of AS/NZS 10542.1 in Australia or New Zealand?

Do not assume so. A project may specifically require the AS/NZS publication. The safest approach is to identify the standard named by the relevant approval, procurement requirement, contract, product documentation or engineering process and use that document as the controlling reference.

Are the technical concepts similar?

Yes. Both frameworks address WTORS performance and the safe restraint of a wheelchair and its occupant in a motor vehicle. However, adoption documents can include national modifications, publication history and amendment requirements that matter when documenting compliance.

What should engineers and WAV builders record?

  • Standard designation and edition used.
  • Relevant amendments or corrigenda.
  • WTORS manufacturer and model.
  • Declared product compliance or compatibility information.
  • Vehicle installation details and restraint geometry.
  • Any separate structural or regulatory approval evidence.

Current ISO development to watch

ISO lists a new Edition 3 work item, ISO/AWI 10542-1, as under development and intended to replace ISO 10542-1:2012. That does not replace the published 2012 edition today, but it is an important development for future WTORS guidance and should be monitored.
